Today, its official name is simply <strong>ZAP<\/strong>, while <strong>ZAP by Checkmarx<\/strong> is also used to reflect its current sponsorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change is more than a rebranding exercise. It represents the evolution of ZAP from a small open-source proxy project into one of the most widely used web application security testing platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The beginning: From Paros Proxy to ZAP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ZAP\u2019s story began with <strong>Paros Proxy<\/strong>, an open-source Java-based web security proxy. Although Paros was useful, its development had slowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2009, security expert Simon Bennetts began modifying the Paros source code. His goal was to create a free, cross-platform and community-driven security tool that could be used by developers, testers and professional penetration testers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first public version, <strong>ZAP 1.0.0<\/strong>, was released on 6 September 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the beginning, ZAP focused on three important principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free and open-source security testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy adoption for beginners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced capabilities for experienced security professionals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Becoming OWASP ZAP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon after its first release, ZAP joined the Open Worldwide Application Security Project, better known as OWASP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This began the <strong>OWASP ZAP era<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The association with OWASP gave ZAP international exposure through conferences, local chapters, training programmes and the wider application-security community. The tool quickly became one of OWASP\u2019s best-known projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this period, ZAP expanded far beyond its original proxy capabilities. It introduced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Active and passive vulnerability scanning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automated website crawling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AJAX application crawling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fuzzing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WebSocket testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authentication and session handling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>APIs and scripting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add-ons and scan rules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contexts and testing scopes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release of <strong>ZAP 2.0<\/strong> was a major milestone. It introduced an add-on marketplace, a redesigned spider, AJAX crawling, WebSocket support and a simpler Quick Start interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These developments transformed ZAP from a basic interception proxy into a complete web application security testing platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZAP enters the DevSecOps era<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As DevOps and continuous delivery became more popular, security teams needed testing tools that could run automatically inside software pipelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ZAP responded by adding support for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Command-line execution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headless scanning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Docker containers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>REST APIs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CI\/CD integration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automated security policies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reusable scanning plans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, ZAP introduced the <strong>Automation Framework<\/strong>. It allowed teams to define spiders, scans, authentication settings, reports and acceptance criteria in structured configuration files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This made it easier to manage dynamic application security testing as code and run consistent scans across development, testing and production-like environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why ZAP left OWASP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2023, ZAP had become a large and complex software project. Maintaining it required more funding, full-time engineers and long-term investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ZAP team explained that although OWASP had helped the project gain visibility and community support, the project needed a more sustainable funding model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2023, ZAP announced that it was leaving OWASP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From that point, the project stopped using the name <strong>OWASP ZAP<\/strong> and adopted the shorter name <strong>ZAP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change was mainly related to governance, ownership and funding. It was not caused by a disagreement over security practices or technical direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZAP by Checkmarx<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2024, ZAP announced a major partnership with application-security company Checkmarx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checkmarx employed key ZAP project leaders and committed funding and engineering resources to support the tool\u2019s future development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project subsequently began using the branding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ZAP by Checkmarx<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, ZAP did not become a closed commercial product. It remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free and open source<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Licensed under Apache License 2.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managed by the ZAP Core Team<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open to community contributions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Available for both manual and automated security testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checkmarx supports the project, but ZAP continues to operate as an independent open-source initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recent ZAP developments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ZAP continues to evolve for modern applications and security workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent developments include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A modernised networking architecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better support for JavaScript-heavy applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Client Spider for browser-based crawling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved CI\/CD and GitHub Actions integration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced duplicate vulnerability alerts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OWASP Penetration Testing Kit integration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early Model Context Protocol integration for AI-assisted workflows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of July 2026, <strong>ZAP 2.17.0<\/strong> is the latest stable core release.
